Unlearning Book Club: And Still I Rise With Marcus Harrison Green

I don't know about you, but lately I've been experiencing a wide range of emotions each day. Maybe it's the early stages of perimenopause—or maybe it's the kind of anxiety that comes with watching a rapid slide into totalitarianism. Who's to say?

What I do know is that turning to leaders like Marcus Harrison Green, author of Readying to Rise, feels like applying a warm heat pack to a bloated, crampy mind. (Nice job with the metaphor, Linds. )

In this month's Unlearning Book Club, Marcus and I explore everything from questions about our faith, our love for the church—but not always for church folks—mental health, and how to stay values-driven leaders, even when it feels like our peers are prematurely throwing in the towel.

This conversation with Marcus—publisher of Hinton Publishing, founder of the South Seattle Emerald, and columnist at The Stranger—is my love letter to you today.

Readying To Rise

by Marcus Harrison Green

Growing up black in south Seattle, journalist and essayist Marcus Harrison Green has a keen sense of exactly where and how things break down. From his own experience in the classroom and at the hands of police to his fierce dissection of the racism baked into media and journalism, Green makes poetry of the clarity that comes after long reflection.

In this collection, Green bears sharp witness to the Black Lives Matter movement, his own journey into and out of religious faith, his grandmother’s lessons, his battle with bipolar disorder, human mortality, blatant hypocrisy, and much more.
